Kitchen Notes

It's a boring post, but mostly to help me take stock. I am making progress. I knew it would take a lot of running around and I'm finally getting into it. Put some miles on the car Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The cabinetmaker is on the third layout and this should be the final. I've been pricing appliances, flooring, backsplash tile and starting to think about lighting. If I go with this cabinetmaker, the granite countertop is included. I'll get at least one or two competitive bids to be sure I'm paying the right amount. Of course, if I get an exceptional bid from another cabinetmaker, I'll need to price countertops. It's sounds simple and there seem not that many choices. But there are an astounding number of possibilities, and everyone you talk to has a place you absolutely MUST check out before you buy. I do think at some point you need to juat say "no more" and choose from what you've already seen.

By day's end yesterday I was exhausted and my body hurt from walking on concrete floors in big box stores. But I'm getting close to decisions on a number of things. And decisions need to be made fairly soon due to lead times for almost everything.

I still struggle with the colors. I'm a big color person as evidenced from all the other rooms in my house. But my daughter pointed out I'm going terribly neutral in my color choices with this. And to be sure I'm thinking about what it will take to sell the house in a few years, so trying not to go wild as I am wont to do. Pale walnut cabinets, darker walnut floors, white appliances, and medium-light granite. For the backsplash I am looking at a mosaic tile that has greens and blues and rust colors throughout, so that will spice it up a bit. I'm taking up all the old teal carpet throughout the upstairs rooms and replacing with wood floors, so there will be a big expanse of the wood. The carpet is still in great condition, and my son has said he would like part of it for his house. That's great with me, I love to recycle rather than add to the landfill.

BTW, do you know that white appliances often must be special ordered? People want stainless steel or black and those are in stock. But everyone I know who has those complains about fingerprints and waterspots. It may not be trendy, but I want white.

Yes, don't get black. These trends are so obnoxious. Remember when all appliances were olive green?

Then someone started this neat idea with color panels on the front of stoves, dishwashers and refrigerators that you could swap out. I noticed that did not last long. Probably kept people from buying new appliances when they wanted to update their colors.

I have white appliances. Go with everything.

I love it here where almost everyone is on a well and they want a refrigerator with an ice maker in the door. I have warned all my friends about them. All have bought them. All have now disconnected them. If you get one you have to have soft water and a whole house water filter.

Yes, that's another thing I don't want--ice and water in the door. The only specific thing I'm looking for in the refrigerator is freezer on the bottom. And the oven I'm planning on is a Maytag with a full-size oven below and a small-size oven above. You give up the warming drawer or storage at the bottom, but it's worth it to me to have two ovens. The small one will be good for cooking for just me. Two ovens will be wonderful for Thanksgiving and other family dinners.

Oh, I think it was called Avocado Green. And Harvest Gold was popular at the same time. Believe it or not, my 30-year old kitchen still has a harvest gold fridge and stove! I had clothes washer and dryer in avocado green, but those were replaced some years ago with -- what else -- white!

I admire your lack of trend.........go for the white.

But I remember your red toaster, Mick, and it inspires me. Why not add bright color through the small appliances like toaster and coffeemaker? I'm thinking RED! :)

Yes, avocado green and in addition to the harvest gold it was also mixed with a turquoise. I remember looking for an apartment in North Carolina where my sole criteria was no avocado green shag carpet.

Red is a nice accent color. Kitchen Aid makes a mixer in that color too. I have an electric can opener in red (bought when I had a cast on one hand). White works for major appliances but don't think white for a coffee maker is in anyway sensible. One appliance where black works.

Oh do I know what you mean with the avocado green shag carpet. I had that in an apartment in the 70's and then in our first home. We didn't replace it until we sold the house. Lesson learned: Replace things while you can still enjoy them.

All my countertop appliances are a very sensible black. I'm liking the idea of red more and more.

This is something I should have done years ago when I had a husband and children living here. And it's something I'll have to do in order to sell eventually. So I'll do it now and enjoy for a few years.

I haven't had wood floors for many years but I think I will like them. With central air and heat, comfort is always assured.
