Poetry Wednesday: Heart, we will forget him

Visit Jacqui's place for Poetry Wednesday

This little poem appealed to me this week. My friend leaves town tomorrow to go look at condos in Minnesota. His house here is sold, it's now fait accompli - he will soon move to regions northerly. This is a little sad, I know. But it says just how I feel.

Heart, we will forget him
by Emily Dickenson

Heart, we will forget him,
You and I, tonight!
You must forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.

When you have done pray tell me,
Then I, my thoughts, will dim.
Haste! ‘lest while you’re lagging
I may remember him!

Nice poem. I have been wondering of late if it takes a young heart to be broken. That isn't to say I don't miss those that leave my life, preferably by moving. But as I age I think I am more a philosopher about it.

I see the void they leave as something I will be filling in time. But I forget people less. And find my mind turns warmly to memories of them at the oddest times.

Perhaps it is the heart that forgets but never the mind?

A wonderful poem for the circumstances B. All I know is that as I get older there are those I cannot forget because they will not be forgot.
The most simple of unconnected events can bring their memory flooding back. Why?..I have no idea.

". . . preferably by moving". Yes, my friend reminds me this type of parting is much preferable to his death! Always the kidder, he is.

Yes, Jacqui and Michael, I won't really forget. We are parting friends and I'm sure we'll keep in touch. My heart feels wistful but not broken.

Hi Bekkie,

Nice choice for a poem. I agree with Jacqui and Michael that growing older changes how we view our friends who eventually must leave for whatever reason. The heart doesn't seem to break as when we were young...because the mind chooses to remember the good memories, which seems to soothe the heart.

I do hope the sweet memories ease the wistfulness.

Thanks for a wonderful poem, and for sharing a bit of yourself. :)
